Whenever we attend a GOGF (Grand Old Gospel Fellowship) event, we are always greeted enthusiastically by Sam Butler. Sam is the Executive Producer of the Grand Old Gospel Hour which can be heard Sundays at 7:30 PM on WFIL AM560 (Philadelphia’s Christian Radio). Sam is also a Streamside alumni. In fact, Sam met his wife, Cyndy at Streamside and he loves to share that story!
Sam first came to Streamside 1964 when he was 13 or 14 years old. He was sent to camp by his home church, Light of the World Chapel in south Philly, where he was saved. While at Streamside, he grew in his love for worship, because they did alot of singing at camp. He was inspired to do youth ministry, because his counselors were so alive and were willing to pour time into his life. He was thrilled to meet other young people interested in the Gospel from around Philadelphia with whom he has established life long friendship, some who still do ministry together. One life long friend was Cyndy who came to Streamside with Faith Fellowship Bible Church. Sam had seen her previously at a Christian basketball league where she was a cheerleader and though “she was so cute.” He saw her again at Streamside and made sure they were on the same team by jumping the line as they were being counted off 1, 2, 3, 4. Cyndy enjoyed hanging out with Sam at camp and was impressed that such a young guy knew so much about the Word of God. Their relationship flourished when she called him to come speak at her church. They have been married for 45 years and Sam is forever grateful for a place like Streamside where he had the opportunity to learn and use his spiritual gifts, but also meet his life partner.
Why is camp a place where so many have met their life partner? Although we would not recommend that a person goes to camp or works at camp with the goal of meeting someone, it is a natural outcome from serving together with others who share your love for the Lord and a common vision of reaching others. Sam thinks that by disconnecting from other distractions in the city while at camp, God speaks to you and one of the things he speaks to you about is how you are living including who is the right kind of spouse for you.
