Biblical principles lived out in shared life

One of the reasons the Christian camp experience is so powerful is that the campers can see biblical principles lived out in shared life. This impact was clearly seen in the life of a camper this summer at Streamside.

One of our teen campers was struggling with both participation and behavior. We found out that he did not really want to be at camp, but was only there because his mother wanted him to come. His counselor was working hard to help him have a fun week while at the same time managing his challenging behavior. One incident and his counselor’s response to it drastically changed the trajectory of his week.

In preparation for our teen championships, we were teaching the young men how to play wiffleball. This particular camper carelessly threw the bat and it hit his counselor in the lip. The counselor walked away clearly in pain- and upset! The camper was fearful of what would happen next. He was caught off guard by the composed and gracious response of his counselor. The camper apologized over and over expecting a harsh response which never came. From that point on we saw a very different camper in both attitude and behavior.

Why the change? This camper was brought face to face with the character of God being lived out in his counselor with a fat lip. It is one thing to be told that God is gracious and forgiving but a much more powerful thing to see another person being gracious and forgiving because they are following after God.
